Sentido Porto Seguro – Salvador

Visitar Centro Histórico/prais, piscinas, coroa vermelha, etc.

Pousada Camamu – frente do porto

lancha raápida – Camami Barra Grande e Camamu Boipeba

SENTIDO INVERSO – Salvador – Porto Seguro

Porto Seguro – Barra Grande – Salvador

Backpacking in the South of Bahia – Important Tips

I’m from Bahia and I travel alone a lot, mainly for work. There goes some tips for those who are coming to the South of Bahia and want to backpack.
Several friends, also here on facebook, already asked me how to move between Porto Seguro, Ilhéus, Itacaré, Barra Grande and Morro de São Paulo.

Logistics here in South of Bahia is a bit difficult, besides the roads, few and dangerous, there are the stretches of sea and river, because Boipeba and Morro de São Paulo are islands of the Municipality of Cairu.
But.. There goes the tips.

Porto Seguro – Salvador

If you want to backpack try to buy a return flight with different legs

Starting with Porto Seguro

If you arrive by plane in Porto Seguro you have accommodation of all prices.

Visit Historical Center/Beaches, swimming pools, CoroaVermelha, etc.

You can still go to Arraial D’ajuda, Trancoso and Caraíva.

Let’s go to Morro de São Paulo

Finishing the Discovery Coast, it is time to take a bus from the company Águia Branca line Porto Seguro – Bom Despacho.

To go to Morro de São Paulo to get off the bus in Valença, in the bus station has motorcycle courier that takes you to the Port or Waterway. There are boats going out from 05 in the morning, the fast ones and the boats po-po-po, the slow ones. If you arrive very late and need to sleep, it has very cheap hostels, but some are not on Booking, look at the old phone book on Iternet.

20 minutes you will be in Morro de São Paulo. Attention Morro de São Paulo, Barra Grande, Boipeba and Caraíva do not have cars, so only a backpack or small handbag is ideal, The streets are sandy and you will have to walk a lot. The arrival in Morro is a difficult slope.

Go to Salvador you have 2 options. Take the Catamaran direct, be careful not to get sicken, because the trip is by open sea.

Or go back to Valença by boat and again take buses at the Bus Station.

It has the Salvador (direct) lines. Get off the bus at Salvador Bus Station and take the subway to the airport. Salvador is the first city in Brazil to have metro at the airport, it is new, cheap (R$3.50) and very good.

Or take the Valença-Bom Despacho line (island of Itaparica), where you will take the ferry boat, cross the Baia deTodos os Santos, jump in the terminal of São Joaquim, take an Uber to the subway terminal of Campo da Pólvora or Lapa. You can also spend a few more days in the capital of Bahia and enjoy.

Let’s go to Barra Grande

To go to Barra Grande (paradise with beautiful natural pools in the municipality of Maraú), you will have to get off the bus before Valença, in the city of Camamu, the bus stop of Águia Branca is right in front of Porto, but there is a problem, has a boat from 06 to 17:00, if you arrive at dawn you have to spend the night in Camamu, and usually the schedules are at night.

Then you will have to book a hostel in advance, and they are not on Booking, Camamu stays full of commercial representatives, sometimes everything is full, suggestion is the Pousada Costa do Dendê, right in front of Porto, nice and cheap (it is not propaganda, I do not know the owner, I do not gain anything), I stay there when I go to work and I think it’s good to spread information. This hostel is good and cheap, so I would suggest booking before that.

You buy the boat ticket, there on the Port.

They noticed that Morro and Barra Grande are in municipalities of difficult acces and to go you have to go through other cities and not through the headquarters.
There is no car in Boipeba or Morro de São Paulo, so there is no taxi to take your big suitcase, it has chargers, but it will be expensive, backpack is the most practical.

Let’s go to Ilhéus

From Porto Seguro to Ilhéus you have to take a bus of Aguia Branca, the ideal is to get off the bus in Itabuna and then pick up a bus of Rota company at the bus station. Arriving in Ilhéus you get off the bus Downtown and there you get a Uber. Best neighborhood for backpackers staying is Pontal, here’s why.

2 days in the city you can see the historic center, buy fine chocolates all over the city, see Cacau do Céu, it is from heaven. You can go to some bar at night. Go in the southern beaches, eat lots of seafood and moquecas and even take a boat trip to Rio do Engenho.

From Ilheus to Itacaré, there are buses from 01 in 01 hour, starting from 05:30 until 20:00 leaving the Bus Station of Ilhéus. If you want to save money, just take a bus from the airport, Vilela or Salobrinho line and get off on the Bus Station. Taxi in Ilheus is really expensive. Use bus or Uber.

From Itacaré to Barra Grande, on the map is close, but the road is catastrophic. It has bus from Itacaré to Camamu that follows the logistics above, or you can hire a transfer in Itacaré or go by car inside of Maraú, it is an adventure and it seems like a Safari, the road is so bad that it even had protest.

OPPOSITE DIRECTION – Salvador – Porto Seguro

Coming from Salvador is another dilemma, there is Águia Branca and Camurugipe companies, but the road through BR 101 is very long. The ideal is to go to the ferry boat terminal, cross by ferry, and there in Bom Despacho (Island of Itaparica) take the bus Bom Despacho/Porto Seguro or Bom Despacho/Itabuna and do the logistics above. These bus companies sell over the Internet.
Salvador already has a subway, it is much cheaper to get by subway to Campo de Pólvora, then take an Uber to the ferry, or to Mercado Modelo to take the Catamaran to Morro (the travel is on Open Sea, sometimes weighs a lot).

In the cities there are ATMs, in the islands (Boipeba, Morro) no, it’s all in cash and  some hostels and restaurants accept card or bank transfer. Take money, because many places acceptcash only. There is always money missing in ATMs in Camamu

I put 3 separate options because I find it difficult and very tiring to do everything, so let’s go the suggestions of excerpts:

Porto Seguro – Ilheus – Itacaré – Barra Grande – Salvador

Porto Seguro – Morro de São Paulo – Boipeba – Salvador

Porto Seguro – Barra Grande – Salvador

Caraíva – Trancoso – Porto Seguro – Ilhéus – Itacaré-Salvador

Or

Salvador – Morro de São Paulo – Ilhéus – Porto Seguro

Salvador – Morro de São Paulo – Boipeba – Porto Seguro

Salvador – Ilhéus – Porto Seguro – Caraíva

Salvador – Ilhéus-Itacaré – Porto Seguro – Trancoso – Caraíva

It all depends a lot on the travel time you have, see that the boat and bus trips take a while and require planning.

So I suggest arriving at your final plane destination 1 or 2 days before. It has already happened, for example, a rain so strong on the southern Lower Road in Ituberá that the bridge crashed and the road was blocked. Arrive in Salvador 2 days before and enjoy the capital. If it is the opposite direction, separate at least 4 days to Porto Seguro/Arraial and Trancoso. Caraíva will have to stay for another post, the village is a delight, but the displacement is difficult so it is better to spend at least 3 days there.
